There are two types of clippers available: a guillotine action and a scissor action clipper. With either type, be very careful not to cut the “quick” in the nail or claw, which is a blood vessel in the centre of the nail. If this is accidentally cut it is painful and could result in bleeding and possible infection.

Holding the paw carefully cut off the very tip of each nail. It is better to cut off very thin slices until you are happy that the sharpness and length has been suitably reduced. Try to make sure no rough edges are left and gently file if necessary.

If your pets claws are very long then the quick inside the nail could also be longer than normal. In this case it is recommended that only a small piece of the nail be cut every couple of days to encourage the quick to recede naturally

For dogs the correct length of nail is when there is a tiny gap between the floor and the nail when they are standing normally. When the dog runs the nail will extend onto the ground, giving extra grip.

Note: It is advisable to seek advice from a vet or professional groomer if you are using clippers for the first time. This will give you the confidence for regular use.
